Dr. Shelley Coleman is a Licensed Professional Counselor in West Virginia and holds specialty certifications in Emotionally Focused Therapy and Supervision as well as Somatic Experiencing. She is also an assistant professor for the Townsend Institute at Concordia University in Irvine, California. Shelley’s clinical work has focused on couples and families, as well as trauma recovery and group work. Shelley completed her PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision from the University of the Cumberlands in Williamsburg, Kentucky.
Shelley’s dissertation focused on the somatic experience of women enduring coercive control by a domestic partner. This remains an area of interest as she focuses her research on women living with domestic abuse and ways to better inform counselors to provide support for women and children seeking safety and healing from its impact. Shelley is a certified Emotionally Focused Therapist and Supervisor holding a lifetime membership with Dr. Sue Johnson’s International Center for Excellence in Emotionally Focused Therapy in Ottawa, Canada. She is also a Somatic Experiencing Practitioner and is a member of Peter Levine’s Somatic Experiencing Trauma Institute.
Shelley owns her own private practice, Valley Counseling and Consulting in Hurricane, WV. Here she offers counseling, coaching, and consulting with a variety of populations, both in person and via telehealth. Her specialties include couple and family counseling, trauma healing, as well as depression, anxiety, and intimate partner violence recovery.
